Sony Digital Paper offers 12.6-ounce business rewrite

(Phys.org) —Sony announced Thursday that its Digital Paper device will be available in May through a select group of Worldox agents, priced at $1,100. The product is intended for professionals catching on to how much more effective business operations might be if not overwhelmed by a daily piled-up clutter of yellow pads, loose papers, filing tasks, and storage bins. Targeted customers of Digital Paper include lawyers, government workers, academics and researchers.

Digital Paper, accommodating 8.5" by 11" documents, will enable the user to read and annotate documents, such as contracts, white papers, articles and legislation. The user can write directly on the device with a stylus. Text can be highlighted or erased. The 13.3-inch display shows views of the documents in PDF format. The touch panel enables users to operate the menu or turn pages. Files are stored in a document repository; the user can collaborate with other team members who need to work on the same files or save documents to the archives. Wi-Fi functionality allows file-sharing over a wireless network.

Sony showcased its 12.6-ounce Digital Paper at this week's American Bar Association Tech Show in Chicago, from March 27 to 29, along with Worldox. The latter is World Software's document management system which is integrating Digital Paper with its product. Legal professionals can use the solution as a replacement for notepads, binders and boxes of files whereby they can save meeting notes directly into the client folder and where attorneys and other legal professionals can more easily organize and reference materials for court hearings, testimonies, client and board meetings, whether they are in or out of the office.

According to Sony, the device has a built-in Lithium-ion rechargeable battery; charging time is about 3.5 hours (computer-based charging) and 2.5 hours with AC adapter. The battery lasts a maximum up to three weeks on a single charge with Wi-Fi off and maximum of two weeks with Wi-Fi on. As for storage, Sony said it provides internal memory of 4 GB coupled with a slot that accommodates a Micro SD card.
