Harvard University

Harvard University was established in 1636 and is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Harvard University is a private institution with an endowment of nearly $30 billion and annually attracts research grants from private and governmental sources. Harvard is divided into schools and research institutes. Among the most noteworthy for our purposes is the Harvard Medical School, Center for Astrophysics, Harvard School of Pubic Health, and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The Gazette publication covers Harvard as a whole. Each of the schools and institutes publish separate news releases and updates of their research, which may be accessed via their Web page. Media inquiries are welcome.

Robots with sticky feet can climb up, down, and all around

Jet engines can have up to 25,000 individual parts, making regular maintenance a tedious task that can take over a month per engine. Many components are located deep inside the engine and cannot be inspected without taking ...

Robotics

Researchers develop 'soft' valves to make entirely soft robots

In recent years, an entirely new class of robot—inspired by natural forms and built using soft, flexible elastomers—has taken the field by storm, with designs capable of gripping objects, walking, and even jumping.

Robotics

Multi-joint, personalized soft exosuit breaks new ground

In the future, smart textile-based soft robotic exosuits could be worn by soldiers, fire fighters and rescue workers to help them traverse difficult terrain and arrive fresh at their destinations so that they can perform ...

Robotics

Soft, multi-functional robots get really small

Roboticists are envisioning a future in which soft, animal-inspired robots can be safely deployed in difficult-to-access environments, such as inside the human body or in spaces that are too dangerous for humans to work, ...

Robotics

An underwater pokeball for capturing sea creatures

The open ocean is the largest and least explored environment on Earth, estimated to hold up to a million species that have yet to be described. However, many of those organisms are soft-bodied—like jellyfish, squid, and ...

Team outlines plan for industrial-scale carbon removal plant

As the Earth continues to heat up, so have calls to dramatically reduce carbon dioxide emissions to avoid catastrophic climate change. But many experts say that even if all emissions stopped tomorrow, the planet would continue ...

Robotics

Robot transitions from soft to rigid

Even octopuses understand the importance of elbows. When these squishy, loose-limbed cephalopods need to make a precise movement—such as guiding food into their mouth—the muscles in their tentacles contract to create ...
