How solar farms can double as havens for Australia's wildlife

Australia's renewable energy transition has prompted the construction of dozens of large-scale solar farms. The boom helps reduce Australia's reliance on fossil fuels, but requires large areas of land to be converted to host ...

Researchers hunt for new solutions for Norwegian offshore wind

"We know a great deal about windmills on land, and something about fixed-bottom wind turbines at sea, but much less about floating wind turbines," says Geir Grasmo, Professor at the University of Agder (UiA).

Offshore wind farms move ahead full sail with underwater help

Off the coast of Portugal, a team of underwater robots is scanning the base of turbines on a wind farm and looking for signs of damage while aerial drones check the blades. The activity is part of a project to reduce inspection ...

How do floating wind turbines work?

Northern California has some of the strongest offshore winds in the U.S., with immense potential to produce clean energy. But it also has a problem. Its continental shelf drops off quickly, making building traditional wind ...

Cooling down solar cells, naturally

A bright, sunny, cloudless day might seem like the optimal setting for solar cells. But too much sun, and too much heat, can actually reduce the efficiency of photovoltaics.

Researchers explore wind farm co-design with communities

In past projects, Professor Lucy Pao and her research group have focused on designing the best control systems for wind turbines—systems aimed at maximizing power production or reducing structural loads.

Farm

A farm is an area of land, or, for aquaculture, lake, river or sea, including various structures, devoted primarily to the practice of producing and managing food (produce, grains, or livestock), fibres and, increasingly, fuel. It is the basic production facility in food production. Farms may be owned and operated by a single individual, family, community, corporation or a company. A farm can be a holding of any size from a fraction of a hectare to several thousand hectares.
