Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT, Massachusetts Institute of Technology admitted its first student in 1865. MIT has five schools and one college. Currently MIT has expanded from its original charter in physical sciences and engineering to include economics, philosophy, linguistics, political science and management. MIT has more than 10,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate program. MIT is a preeminent institution for learning, research and boasts 73 Nobel Laureates, 47 Medal of Science recipients and 31 MacArthur Fellows who have been associated with the Institute. MIT is currently transforming its campus to green energy. International scholars from Asia, Europe, Canada and across the globe make MIT home for their independent research. Over 3,000 international students are in the undergraduate and graduate schools at MIT. Public access and media access is welcomed.

Robotics

A new optimization framework for robot motion planning

It isn't easy for a robot to find its way out of a maze. Picture these machines trying to traverse a kid's playroom to reach the kitchen, with miscellaneous toys scattered across the floor and furniture blocking some potential ...

Computer Sciences

Synthetic imagery sets new bar in AI training efficiency

Data is the new soil, and in this fertile new ground, MIT researchers are planting more than just pixels. By using synthetic images to train machine learning models, a team of scientists recently surpassed results obtained ...

Robotics

Using large language models to code new tasks for robots

You've likely heard that "experience is the best teacher"—but what if learning in the real world is prohibitively expensive? This is the plight of roboticists training their machines on manipulation tasks. Real-world interaction ...

Computer Sciences

Technique enables AI on edge devices to keep learning over time

Personalized deep-learning models can enable artificial intelligence chatbots that adapt to understand a user's accent or smart keyboards that continuously update to better predict the next word based on someone's typing ...

Robotics

This 3D printer can watch itself fabricate objects

With 3D inkjet printing systems, engineers can fabricate hybrid structures that have soft and rigid components, like robotic grippers that are strong enough to grasp heavy objects but soft enough to interact safely with humans.

Software

Boosting faith in the authenticity of open source software

Open source software—software that is freely distributed, along with its source code, so that copies, additions, or modifications can be readily made —is "everywhere," to quote the 2023 Open Source Security and Risk Analysis ...

Robotics

New method uses crowdsourced feedback to train robots

To teach an AI agent a new task, like how to open a kitchen cabinet, researchers often use reinforcement learning—a trial-and-error process where the agent is rewarded for taking actions that get it closer to the goal.

Engineering

Boosting rocket reliability at the material level

The success of the SpaceX Falcon 9 reusable launch vehicle has been one of the most remarkable technological achievements of the last decade. Powered by SpaceX's Merlin engine, the Falcon 9 booster can be reused over 10 times, ...
