First of its kind emissions-free natural gas power plant undergoes first fire

First of its kind CO2-free natural gas burning power plant undergoes first fire
NET Power's 50 MWth Demonstration Plant in La Porte, Texas

Officials with NET Power, LLC recently reported the first successful firing of the combustor for a new kind of natural gas-based power plant free of carbon emissions, without having to use carbon capture technology.

The new plant, based in La Porte Texas, is a demonstration and test facility to test a new way to make electricity—they call it Allam Cycle technology after Rodney Allam, the inventor of the design. Doing so, engineers report, involves employing a seven-stage process that results in the production of electricity and emission of liquid water. Also, a small amount of CO2 is collected in a form that can be used for other applications such as extraction.

The seven-stage process starts with a device that pulls oxygen from the air which it sends to a combustor. In the combustor, natural gas is combined with oxygen and heated with . The hot CO2 is then used with water to drive an unusually small turbine that produces electricity. At the same time, a heat exchanger pulls energy from the hot exhaust emitted by the turbine and sends it to a device that uses it to heat CO2 later in the process. The next step involves allowing the CO2 to cool and then compressing it. Then, approximately 5 percent of the CO2 is siphoned away and stored in a sellable form. The final step makes use of the energy from step four to heat the CO2 before it is returned to the combustor.

NET Power officials also claim that new power based on technology displayed in La Porte will not cost any more to build or run than traditional natural gas burning plants. The next step in the development of the new technology will involve extensive testing surrounding the first fire. Once that has been completed, the team will integrate the with the turbine and start producing electricity.

In 2009, Rodney Allam, a former head of technology development at Air Products, joined the company to work on a new thermodynamic cycle so all the emissions are controlled from the outset.

Process description
The cycle is not a combined cycle. Instead, it exploits the special thermodynamic properties of carbon dioxide as a working fluid by eliminating the energy losses that steam-based cycles encounter due to the heat of vaporization and condensation.

According to the company, the Allam Cycle (named after its lead inventor) removes the steam Rankine Cycle from the process and improves upon the simpler, more efficient Brayton Cycle. The Allam Cycle combusts natural gas or synthetic gas (derived from a coal gasification system) with pure oxygen (oxyfiring), as opposed to burning gas with air.

How do they prevent the oxidation of each methane molecule (CH4) resulting in the formation of one molecule of carbon dioxide (CO2) ?
I fail to see how they can get around the basic laws of chemistry here.

From the article;
"...5 percent of the CO2 is siphoned away and stored in a sellable form..."

OH! So they have NOT found a way around the basic laws of chemistry!
So the title of this article is a LIED where it says "CO2-free natural gas burning" because it is NOT "CO2-free" as they claim it to be but rather it DOES generate CO2. What a disappointment.

They don't. The article is misleading by leaving out details.

They combust methane and oxygen in a CO2 atmosphere, which results in water vapor and more CO2. The water is separated, the supercritical CO2 runs a turbine, and part of the CO2 is cycled back to the combustion chamber while the rest is piped out of the facility.

This concentrated CO2 stream can then be used for other purposes, such as pumping it underground into oil/gas wells to extract more, or sequestred in the ground (CCS), or used as a chemical feedstock for synthetic fuels and other processes.

If nothing is done with the gas, it will be vented into the atmosphere. The point of the cycle is a) the output is pure CO2 that needs no further separation b) no emissions of NOx from combustion in a nitrogen atmosphere or particulate matter or CO/CH pollution c) smaller, cheaper, more efficient equipment

One advantage is, that if the system is run on synthetic methane from power-to-gas facilities, it can return the pure CO2 in a closed loop without further separating costs and that improves the process efficiency considerably e.g. 40% -> 60% with existing tech and thereby lowers the cost of energy storage.

The main advantage over steam turbines is that steam turbines are temperature limited to between about 100 C - 500 C on one part because of the boiling point of water, and on another part the chemical properties of H2O which starts to react with metals at high temperatures and pressures and causes rapid corrosion. The CO2 loop can run over a larger temperature difference which improves the thermal efficiency of the turbine.

So the title of this article SHOULD have been something like;

"First of its kind much more environmentally friendly natural gas burning power plant undergoes first fire"

and NOT say the "CO2-free" bit of nonsense like it did.

This is science. That means, its hyped up theory designed to draw in capital to support the families of scientists involved in developing this theory. Facts don't matter.
